Any Burners?

Do we have any Burners (if you don't know what that means, you aren't one) on the Upper West Side? It might be fun to have a beer in the 'hood.

I'm here, but not a burner ...yet, just planning on it this year. How about you? UWS isn't really the kind of place one would expect a burner to live, huh?

      Hiya Melanie,

There's Burners everywhere...and different kinds of Burners. Other than the weather, there are some very similar things about the UWS and BRC.

This will be my sixth year.

Weren't you the one with Rv advice for me? I'm still checking into that. How do you travel when you go? If I go, it will be the beest 40th birthday celebration ever. My b-day is Sept 7th. Tell me more about BRC

          Yep, that was me.

Having experimented with a few different options, I've settled into flying into and out of Las Vegas. The company I rent from -- El Monte -- doesn't have an office in Reno. San Francisco is a little closer, but it's a tough drive, you have to go over the Sierra Nevadas. The trip from Las Vegas is much easier, and it's good to spend a few days getting used to the desert while you can still go to a discount drug store. Plus, there's a certain charm to beginning and ending the trip in Las Vegas.

It's hard to describe Black Rock City to somebody who has never been there. You've no doubt seen the pictures, which give you an idea, but they're nothing like being there. One thing that doesn't come through is how many different kinds of people go. There's everything from full-time ravers to religious people of all persuasions. Some people only go out at night, some during the days, some places are all kids, some are all old people and all of them can mix. The only things that tie it together are that you have 35,000 people who think that paying a fair chunk of change to go to the middle of nowhere is a good idea and the annoying background thumpa-thumpa from the large-scale sound camps.

Dunno if that helped, but feel free to ask specific questions...

That was very helppful. Thanks. If I rent/buy an rv, I'll likely drive across country to get there. I think it's worth the trip. Need to look at a map to be sure though. What's the best place to park there if I'm in an rv?

If you have an RV, you kind of have total freedom at Black Rock City. As a first timer, however, you'll probably be happiest hooking up with an established camp, especially if you're coming alone. But you can just show up and park where you'd like. The earlier you get there, the more spaces there will be toward the center. There is something to be said, however, for camping out in the "suburbs," where it's quieter and less frenetic.

One thing you can probably avoid is the banks of porta-potties. Some people like to be close enough to make it a short walk, but since you'll have your own facilities you can avoid the downside, which, as you might imagine, is the fragrance.

Traveling cross-country is cool, but remember that if you rent, you'll have to pay a mileage charge -- about 27 cents. Gasoline will raise that to about 50 cents, so if your round trip is 5,000 miles, that's an extra $2,500.
